Black Light Miniature Golf Course
Assignment 1: Construct a sculptural obstacle or hole for our class Black Light Miniature Golf Course that utilizes geometric abstraction. Select materials with an emphasis on recycled and reclaimed materials, using primarily wood, metal, and plastic. Form should be the primary focus and surface treatment secondary. Individually you are only responsible for one object that will combine with your classmates’ work to make an entire hole. We will work as a class to create a cohesive final product including everyone's objects. Then, of course, we will play the Black Light Miniature Golf Course and have a pizza party.
Toys and Play
Assignment 2: Design a sculptural toy or game. Utilize new techniques and tools that may include the laser cutter, the lathe, every kind of saw and every kind of sander we have, and polyurethane for a nice clean finish if you use wood. An emphasis will be placed on iterative design and your initial attempt will not be your final product. You will be evaluated on your actual construction, as well as the ambition and sophistication of your design. Additionally, one of the major objectives of this project will be the ability to work through an idea to completion. It's almost never right the first time. This will result in multiple in progress critiques and culminate in a final class exhibition in a gallery on campus.

Park(ing) Day September 20, 2013
Assignment 1: You have 2 weeks to individually design and create an abstracted element for our fluorescent Pink Park In A Parking Space, using wood, aluminum, plastic, and recycled materials. Use tools such as the table saw, band saw, compound miter saw, belt sander, disc sander, shear cutter, sheet roller, amongst others, in the SJSU Art & Design Shop. We will team up with the Greenbelt Alliance and the City of San Jose to obtain 2 parking spaces for the entire day and participate in the international event Park(ing) Day. We will work as a class to create a cohesive final product and create an event around our Pink Park In A Parking Space for the entire day, including a cotton candy machine.

You will be evaluated on your actual construction, as well as the ambition and sophistication of your design. Use this assignment as an opportunity to develop your concentration in a three dimensional form. If you are a Pictorial major, make it in space. If you are Digital Media, make it in real space. This assignment will result in a class exhibition in a gallery on campus.
"The Field Test" Final Project
Assignment 3: Create a site specific object or set of objects and install them. Then photograph the installation, resulting in an image or collection of images. You will work in teams each with a Photography major, but you are responsible for directing the creation of the image. You must identify 3 primary elements of interaction, of which the object (or set of objects) are only 1. This means the other 2 elements must come from the site. You will be evaluated on: 1) the object or set of objects 2) site specificity 3) the relationship of the 3 elements and most importantly 4) the final image.
