Migration evolved from Pallet of Penguins, moving the cast concrete forms out into the streets of downtown San Jose. Fluorescent pink penguins were locked to bike racks throughout the city, beginning in the SoFA Art District and moving up First Street through the Paseo de San Antonio before eventually arriving in front of the San Jose Museum of Art.
By treating the penguins as both sculptural objects and a migrating population, the project uses humor to explore ownership, public and private space, displacement, and civic identity. Their movement through the city transforms the urban landscape into both exhibition space and subject, asking who and what is allowed to occupy public space and how belonging is negotiated within it. 2013
