Pipe Chair

Pipe Chair was constructed entirely inside a Home Depot using pipes taken directly from the store’s inventory. The materials remained unpurchased while the chair was assembled, temporarily transforming retail merchandise into a functional object within the store itself. Once completed, the chair was taken to the register and purchased as its individual pipe components. By using a privately owned store as a space for making the work, the piece blurs the line between public and private space while raising questions about ownership, sovereignty, functionality, and the point at which materials become an object. 2002
