SUPERMASSIVE

SUPERMASSIVE is a neon, argon, and projection installation created at the Edinburgh College of Art. It reuses light objects developed for synthetic sunshine and places them throughout a room larger than a basketball court. The lights illuminate fragments of the existing architecture while the vast areas of darkness between them remain equally important. Like distant points in a galaxy, each illuminated area suggests a much larger system extending beyond what can be seen. 

The work considers the systems that shape how we move through and understand the world, beginning with architecture and infrastructure and extending into commercial and political structures. Light makes parts of those systems visible while leaving their larger connections hidden. In one intervention, a pulsing projection of a neon unit further separates the light from its physical source through technological mediation. Despite the scale of the installation, the experience is quiet and serene. SUPERMASSIVE uses illumination and darkness to consider how we orient ourselves within structures much larger than what we can immediately perceive. 2015
